The power of Facebook lists

28 Feb 2014

Google+ has ‘circles’. You can post to a certain circle so not everyone needs to see everything.

The other day I got a message from Alice: “I think I can begin to see the appeal in Google+ where I think you can keep contact groups separate. Do I need two Facebook identities – one for personal and one for ‘projects’ so that not all my friends see personal stuff?”

The answer is “No, you don’t”

Because Facebook has lists too and using them has a lot of possibilities:

  1. You can post to a certain group, not having to bother everyone with everything.
  2. You can post personal stuff to those just family and friends that you want.
  3. You can post work stuff to only your clients or collegues, so friends do not have to see.
  4. You can share recipes with just the friends that love to cook

Etcetera.

You can post whatever you want to whomever you want, if you set the lists up right.

So how do you do that?

Setting up Facebook lists

Step 1: Go to Home, scroll down on the left side to Friends, hover over it and click More

Step 2: You already have the lists ‘Close Friends’, ‘Family’, ‘Acquintances’. You can make a new one by clicking Create list

Step 3: Name list and add people

3Make list

That is all it takes to make a new list. You can add as many people as you want to a list.

Adding people

Adding people to lists can be done in multiple ways:

#1: Going to the list

  1. Click the list you want to edit

  2. Click Manage list

  3. Click Edit list
  4. You get a pop up with those that are in the list currently. Click On this list and change to Friends.

  2. Hover over Friends
  3. Click Add to another list
    8Addtoanotherlist
  4. Click on the list(s) you want to add the friend to

#3: Adding to a list from the feed

You can do the same trick as #2 but from the feed.

  1. Hover over someone’s name
  2. Hover over Friends
  3. Click Add to another list
  4. Click the list(s) you want to add to.

Posting to a certain list

Ok. So now you know how to make lists.

But how do you post to them?

That is actually really easy:

  1. Start a message
  2. Click Public
  3. Click the list you want to use (Click See all lists if you can’t see the one you want)
  4. Now post
