How to set up your own blog – part 2

22 Jan 2014

“Sure, love the posts about blogging. But how do I start??”

If that is you, don’t worry.

This week is all about setting up your own blog with WordPress!

I will try to make it as easy possible. I will tell you how to keep it simple and when to ask for help. Just follow my instructions.

Part 2 – Getting a theme

After installing your own WordPress, you want a nice look for it of course.

There are a lot of ways to get a theme – a look – for your website.

Option 1: WordPress own theme’s (both free and payed)

WordPress has a lot of themes you can put on your blog.

  • Log in to your WordPress
  • Go to ‘Appearance’ – ‘Themes’
  • Click ‘New theme’
  • Filter on characteristics you’d like
  • Pick one and click install
  • Click activate

You now have the new look on your blog

Option 2: Free theme from third party

There are a lot of people who make themes, both free and payed. If you google on ‘WordPress free themes’ you will find loads of sites that offer free themes.

  • Surf through them
  • Pick one you like
  • Download the .zip file of that theme
  • Click ‘New theme’
  • Click ‘Upload’ (small link almost on top of screen)
  • Search for the .zip you downloaded
  • Install and activate

Option 3: Payed theme from third party

There are also a lot of payed themes. What I love about them is that most of the time you get more options with the look, like different layouts or looks. Payed themes are also, in general, better updated and taken care of.

Sometimes you have a third party that offers one or more themes, that you pay for per theme. At the moment I am using The Muse (affiliate link) for instance, a theme by Themefuse. I payed for just that theme, while they have many more.

Some parties also offer you one price for all themes you have, so you can always change your mind if you want something new. Elegant Themes for instance (affiliate link). My new look – to be revealed some time in the future – is from them. I am gonna use Divi, their newest addition.

When you found a look you like the steps are the same as for option 2:

  • Download the .zip file of that theme
  • Click ‘New theme’
  • Click ‘Upload’ (small link almost on top of screen)
  • Search for the .zip you downloaded
  • Install and activate

Next up: Step 3 – Making it yours

Tell me: what look do you have for your blog?
